Girona is much more accessible than ever before. Until recently Girona in Spain has not been considered a short stay destination due to the airport being relegated to serving charter flights, but all that has changed with the introduction of daily scheduled services from the UK Girona is set to become a popular weekend destination.

Dating from pre-Roman times, the city is full of historical sites and in the last 2,000 it has been under seige 25 times and captured seven. The magnificent cathedral is perched high above the rest of the city and has the widest Gothic nave in the world at just under 23 meters. The cathedral in Girona Spain was built between the 12th and 14th century on the site of a mosque dating from when the Moors occupied the city.

Girona in Spain is bisected by the river Onyar, which separates the modern city, rich on coal mining and other industries, from the narrow cobbled streets and steep starways of the old town. Built right on the banks of the Onyar are ochre coloured houses, forming a colourful parade. The river is spanned by several bridges, including one by Gustav Eiffel, responsible for the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the design of New York's Statue of Liberty. Visit the Plaça de la Independència a collonaded 18th century square on the north side of the town just across the river from the old town with many bars and restaurants.

Further up Carrer de la Força in Girona begins the steps that lead to the immense cathedral, some parts dating from the 11th century and with the largest Gothic nave in the world. Local legend has it that if a single person sits in Charlemagne's Chair, at the back of the nave, they will remain single; if a couple sit their they will get married. The Cathedral houses the Tapestry of Creation, dating from the 11th century and used to educate local people in the story of Genesis.
