Santa Ponsa is now a thriving holiday resort, and popular destination for British and German property owners, it is hard to believe that 40 years ago there was only one hotel in the town. However, Santa Ponsa is steeped in history going back well beyond the last 40 years. When looking for Santa Ponsa property you should remember that it was here that King Jaime disembarked on 10th September 1229 in his quest to conquer the island and take it from the Moors after more than 300 years of Muslim domination. One of the biggest Fiestas in Mallorca takes place in Santa Ponsa in the week leading up to the second Sunday in September, to commemorate the landing of Jaime.
The main sandy beach is separated from the pinewoods by the recently constructed promenade. The pinewoods provide excellent relief from the sun on extremely hot days and in the Summer months are very popular with locals who come from palma and surrounding areas for the day on a Sunday. You need to get there early to book a good spot. When buying Santa Ponsa property you can travel to the most northerly point on the island which only takes about and hour and a half, or a bit more depending which way you go and how leisurely you want to make your trip. It is worth taking your time and enjoying the beauty of the countryside. If you go to Soller at the north of the island, you can either take the picturesque route along the coast through the lovely towns of Valldemossa and Deya. Alternatively, you can take the quicker route through the middle of the island from Palma and then through the newly constructed toll tunnel. However, you can take the mountain road instead of the tunnel, but be prepared to negotiate more than 50 spectacular hairpin bends!
Golf is popular amongst many people buying property in Santa Ponsa and, as a visitor, you are allowed to play on the Santa Ponsa I course. You cannot play on the other Santa Ponsa courses, they are reserved exclusively for share-holders. Nearly all bars in town show live sporting events on TV, with the Barclatcard Premiership, Champions League and UEFA Cup matches dominating the screens from August to May. And don't forget, most bars show a LIVE Barclaycard Premier League game every Saturday afternoon - a luxury you don't get 'back home.'
